From the President

Well, the season is truly over and we go into maintenance mode, getting ready for the upcoming season and of course the AGM in July. National Volunteer Week 2021 commenced on Monday, 17 May. It’s a chance as a board to thank all our volunteers for their extraordinary efforts throughout the 2020/21 season. It was a challenging year, and one we will never forget! Without our volunteers we would not have a club; the many hours that volunteers spend on the beach looking after the public, the time put into managing patrols, running the club, maintaining the club, training, coaching, nippers, running the bar and the kiosk - you guys are the backbone of the club and Volunteer week is to acknowledge everything you do - thank you.

I have been appointed to the community working group of the Cape to Cape Resilience Project which is addressing the erosion issues at Inverloch as well as other issues. I attended a meeting last month and I was shocked to learn of their current time line and the lack of urgency they place on the recommendations. I followed up with several discussions with the leaders of the committee and have spoken to the Federal Minister who lends his support and offered to come down and meet with the people leading the group. I have a follow up meeting and will keep you informed.

Just an update on club maintenance and access. We are approaching the end of maintenance work at the club. New windows are in and look great, CCTV and Wi-Fi upgrades are in progress, the club has been rekeyed and the new deck will start to be installed after the June long weekend. So, a great start for the new season. Club access will be limited to on-call emergency volunteers until the end of the works. New fobs will be issued as we change the security system with the CCTV update.

Also, a final note on mental health, let’s not leave anyone behind, check in with friends and relatives, the isolation and mental stress that the pandemic has left on some may be lying under the surface and we need to make sure to keep an eye on each other. “Are you OK?” can be three little words that make a difference. If any members are feeling isolated or alone at this time, please remember you can access the LSV Employee Assistance program via LSV Comms (13SURF) or reach out to one of the following services:
Lifeline: 13 11 14
Beyond Blue: 1300 22 4636
And get the jab as you become eligible – I’ve had my first shot!
